What you should be able to do

Warm up

These body parts need to get ready
  • Hips (work on flexibility so straddle your legs)

  • Legs (jumping exercises to build explosive power).

  • Spine (side bends).

  • Energy (aerial is a move with high intensity), make sure you are sweating and ready to go before you start.

Mistakes

The 3 most common mistakes are:

- Doing a butterfly kick not an aerial (wrong angle)

- Cutting short the landing leg

- Wrong direction of energy (always needing the hands for support)

To manage the transition from the cartwheel to the aerial it's important to understand to use one leg to push and one to pull. You want to stay on the same spot and jump up, not forward.

Progressions

The key to unlock moves:
small steps

To master a complex move like the aerial you need to break it down into small single projects.

Starting from scratch you do a low cartwheel role. unlocking the Cartwheel (single arm cartwheel) you move on to the aerial. Why should you chose this approach?

  • safe/controlled way to learn proper technique

  • you get comfortable going sideways over your head step by step

  • accessible for beginners

  • chances to get injured shrink to a minimum

  • you will master the cartwheel
